With the handling over the Port of Karachi to Pakistan, North-West India lost an outlet to the sea. On January 20, 1952, the then Prime Minister, Late Shri Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for the new Port. Ever since Kandla has looked forward towards progress and was declared Major Port in 1995.
Consistent, enlightened policies have ensured that the port stood up to the challenge of the surging flood of trade created by a hinterland that covers over a million sq. km. from the north and North-West of India. Kandla today has become the hub of India's foodgrains and oil imports. |

Today's name,"Anjar" comes from the Arabic Ain Gerrah, "the source of Gerrah", the name of an ancient stronghold founded in the era prior to Hellenistic times. |

The Last Frontier Fort of Western India: Lakhpat is the last town situated at the western end of India, on the India-Pakistan border, at the junction of Kori Creek and Rann of Kachchh. Lakhpat probably, derives its name from the prosperous maritime trade, which generated a daily income of one lakh (1,00,000) Kori, an old currency of Kachchh State. Another legend says that since Rao Lakha founded it, so it is named Lakhpat.
Lakhpat is a fortified town with high walls, several gates and bastions made out of hard stone. After a short period of prosperity, Lakhpat lost its maritime significance in 1851 AD, when the Sindhu River changed its course. Once a thriving town with population of 15,000, it is today a deserted town with only few families living here. |

Dholavira is a relatively recent discovery. This Indus city has been excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India since 1989. Habitation at the site began well before 3000 B.C. and continued for more than a millennium. This long history provides important information about the formative stage of the Indus Civilization and its subsequent decline. The city's unique stone architecture is partly responsible for the remarkable preservation of its "Citadel", "Middle Town" and "Lower Town," all surrounded by gigantic water reservoirs that were cut into the bedrock. Application is currently being made to UNESCO to register and protect Dholavira as a World Heritage site.
